gngr is a Desktop web browser that runs on the Java Platform, allowing it to run on a variety of Operating Systems. It's been developed for about 11 years, but there hasn't been anything since 2025.
Gngr is a new, cross platform browser that focuses on privacy. It uses a new, custom built rendering engine - it's not just a wrapper around Chromium/Blink or WebKit.
Gngr is written in Java so that it can be run on different platforms.
Privacy sounds like a big focus for Gngr; their homepage stats that Javascript and cookies are supported but disabled by default; meaning that you have to choose to use either of them. This can help cut down on technologies that track you, but might also be a bit annoying to use on a daily basis.
I found gngr listed in the side column of /r/browsers on Reddit; there's only very old activity on the subreddit and I can't find many other pages or sites on the internet that refer to gngr. The git repo also hasn't been updated in a long time (except for a small license update a few months ago).
It looks like a neat project that hasn't been updated in a long time. The browser doesn't look ready for prime time, but since it is more than just a wrapper for a popular rendering engine I hope to see development continue and a bit more variety in the browser ecosystem to develop.
